About
Charlie Nicholas began his professional career with Scottish Premier League side Glasgow Celtic. He won the league Championship on two successive occasions in 1982 and 1983 and was named as Player of the Year in 1983 by both the Professional Footballers' Association and the Scottish Football Writers' Association, before signing for Arsenal later that year.
He remained at Highbury for five years, winning the much-coveted Littlewoods Cup. In 1988, he transferred to Scottish Premier League side Aberdeen for £400,000.
It was his ambition to win the League Championship for a third time and despite although scoring an impressive 37 goals in 78 league appearances (during his two seasons with the side), rivals Glasgow Celtic won the championship trophy on both occasions.
In 1990, Charlie transferred to Celtic once more, hoping to achieve his ambition with his former club. Once again the Cup was to elude him, but he remained at Parkhead for five seasons, netting 37 goals in 114 league appearances. These included a celebrated goal against his old side at Highbury in 1991, when the two teams played in a testimonial match for Paul Davis, resulting in a 2-2 draw.
Charlie is now one of Sky Sports' most famous and likeable football pundits on Soccer Saturday alongside the team including Matt Le Tissier and Paul Merson.
After a final season with Second Division side Clyde, Charlie hung up his boots for good. He has a place in the Arsenal Hall of Fame, where he is remembered alongside such greats as Ian Wright, Tony Adams, Kenny Sansom and David Rocastle.
