About

Jorge Costa was a strong defender who was known for his physical presence in the middle of the back four. He was the captain of Porto for a number of seasons and led them them to Champion’s League glory in 2004 under the guidance of Jose Mourinho.

Costa signed as a youth player for F.C Porto in 1988 and was loaned out to Penafiel and Maritimo in the 1990-91 and 1991-92 seasons respectively. Jorge had many successful seasons at Porto, winning 6 Portuguese leagues as well as taking over the captaincy from Joao Pinto, another club legend.

In the 2001-2002 season, the defender was loaned out to Charlton Athletic, for whom he made over 20 appearances before returning back to Porto. The season of his return Porto won the treble under Mourinho (Portuguese league and cup as well as the UEFA cup). The following season Jorge brought even more success to the club, lifting the Champion’s League trophy and the Intercontinental cup.

Jorge completed his final career move to Standard Liege in 2005, where he spent one season before retiring in June 2006.

Since his retirement from the game Jorge has taken up some coaching roles, firstly at Portuguese side S.C Braga and he is currently in a management role at S.C Olhanense.
