Mart Poom is a retired Estonian goal keeper. He is a national hero having amassed 120 caps for the national side. Mart had an extensive club career, playing for 10 different clubs.
He started his career in his home town of Tallinn, playing for two clubs before brief spells in Switzerland and Finland. In 1999 Mart moved to England and joined his first Premier League Club, Derby County. He made his debut for Derby against Manchester United and he won the clubs Player of the Year award during the 1999/2000 season.
In 2002, Mart moved to Sunderland and (to the delight of their fans!) even scored a 90th minute equaliser in a game against Derby County, his former club. Mart then went on loan to Arsenal and the deal was made permanent in 2006. Chances were limited at the Gunners and Mart travelled the short distance to Watford, where he played out the rest of his career.
Poom is a hero in Estonia. His first international game was against Slovenia in 1992 and his long career finished with a game against Portugal in 2009. He was named by the Estonian FA as the country’s greatest player in 50 years and he has won the Estonian Player of the Year on six occasions.
He is currently working as a goalkeeping coach for Arsenal and the Estonian national team.
