About

Tony Adams was an England international central defender who played for Arsenal for an impressive 22 years. Adams remains the only player in English football history to captain a title-winning side in three different decades.

Adams joined Arsenal in 1980 as a 14-year old school boy, making his debut aged 17 three years later. He became a first team regular in the 1985-86 season winning the League Cup with Arsenal a year later.

Tony became captain of the club aged just 21 and remained captain for the rest of his career, lasting a further 14 years.

Between 1989 and 2004 Adams won 2 league championships, the League Cup, The FA Cup and the European Cup Winner’s Cup.

In 1996 Arsene Wenger joined Arsenal keeping Adams as captain, who repaid the manager by helping Arsenal to the FA Cup and Premiership doubles in 1998 and 2002. Adams retired at the end of the season after an extremely successful career at Arsenal, becoming one of the most decorated players in history.

Adams also had a successful international career, captaining England for many of his 66 caps and scoring their last international goal at the ‘old’ Wembley stadium against Ukraine in May 2000.

After his retirement from the game, Adams has taken a number of coaching roles at clubs including Wycombe Wanderers and Feyenoord. In 2006 Tony joined Harry Redknapp at Portsmouth as assistant manager, before taking over as the caretaker manager of the club in 2008.
